I’ve been involved in product design for nearly 25 years in every capacity from early conceptual ideation to the production floor. I’m a skilled craftsman and a deep blue sky thinker. I have worked for and with many of the big names in town on a wide range of projects.
In 2019 I converted a 40’ shipping container into a studio and I’ve been having a lot of fun exploring opportunities from their since.
H.A.Ward is an exploration of a line of sustainable resimercial furniture that is highly durable in its construction, intuitively functional and attractive in a timeless way. The primary motivation is to be antithetical to fast furniture. The initial product being developed is a basic stool intended to compete in the faux Tolix market.
My work with Byrne focused on bringing a design thinking mindset in-house and challenging expectations for material, function and aesthetics in the residential, hospitality and contract furniture products we developed. The vertically integrated nature of the company required everything from an understanding of the involute ways peoples work required power delivery to the ability to quote tooling costs for a small plastic part on the fly.
I was intimately involved in the development of each of these chairs. Working in multidisciplinary project teams my contributions were focused primarily on developing the geometry and material selection for complex comfort and support surfaces.

This is a line of furniture and accessories for a local furniture manufacturer. The project was to add an extension to their existing case goods line. By re-configuring existing storage systems with a newly developed leg system, work surfaces and desk accessories, the customer is positioned to enter new areas of their market.

I’ve built thousands of things hundreds of ways. There’s always a new material or process to explore. This work ranges from things I’ve made for friends and family to work I’ve done for Meijer gardens. The giant model balsa airplane was my 2010 Art Prize entry. I particularly enjoyed making the wooden spoons and have recently started making knives. A process that is equal parts art science and magic.
I included a few things I made as a response to Covid. Not fun particularly but import.
A friend of mine asked me if I knew how to make a hatchet. I said I will by the time we are done. The result is a fun and very functional bush-craft hatchet.
Sometimes you just need to make your own stuff.
Good design comes from understanding.
This project is an example of focused User Interface design. The goal was to develop forward thinking controls for a high end dishwasher.
Visual thinking.
I grew up in my fathers dark room. That being said, I pretty much stick to digital and I rarley spare the filters.
